EPSA Public Health Circular -
Pedro Redentor Ribeiro
First of all, let me salute you for your second-year extremely important Celebrating Day! I hope this will stay as needed, until Hospice and Palliative Care be a constant worldwide reality.
Until that glorious day, it is essential to share information about this topic as much as possible. The European Pharmaceutical Students' Association (EPSA) represents over 120,000 pharmacy students in 32 European countries. The objective of EPSA is "To develop the interests and opinions of European Pharmacy Students' and to encourage contact and co-operation between them".
Therefore, EPSA Public Health Working Committee created a Circular regarding World Hospice & Palliative Care Day in order to share it in EPSA Members all over Europe, by internet and/or by posting it on Faculties walls, being an excellent way to pass the message to Pharmaceutical Students.
This was only possible with the information material available at your website. For that, really thank you!
This Circular will go with this message. Please take a look, drag your mouse over it (for further information and even to play your interesting pedagogical game) and, if possible, share it! If you want, please send me your feedback about it.
I am totally available to collaborate with you, for your cause. I believe that we gave, together, the first step. Now we just need to improve it!
Very happy to be part of this day's awareness! Best regards!

Lady's day out ! - India
Abhijit Dam
We are working in a backward & tribal state in India & our hospice is the first in our state. We, a group of professional unpaid volunteers run a domiciliary based hospice. We hardly have any funds to speak of. Hence, today we took a patient with multiple-infarcts & spasticity who is bedridden & stays in a slum for an outing. This lady had not had a glimpse of the outside world for the last 6 years. She broke down with tears streaming down her face during the tour. Her smile of gratitude at the end of the day was our greatest -ever gift.
Sincerly,

Convention - The undergraduate education in Palliative Medicine, Rome - Italy
On the 7th of October 2006 Antea Formad, the Palliative Training and Research Centre of the Antea Association, is organizing a convention in Rome (Italy) involving more than 350 university students: the aim is to promote the spreading of Palliative Medicine and Care within Medicine and Nursing Faculties of Rome. Since 2000 we organize Post-graduate Master Courses in Palliative Medicine in cooperation with the University of “Tor Vergata” (Rome, Italy) and we believe in the necessity to spread the teaching of Palliative Medicine also at an undergraduate level, creating a Palliative Care culture in the Italian universities. For this reason we decided to repeat this meeting each year on the world Day of Hospices and Palliative Care. Poem for Hospices all around the World - Denmark
Ole Bang
POEM written up to WHPCD by royal actress Ghita Noerby, protector for Hospicefonden Denmark
The thought about hospice is a thought about life
The hospice thought is to bring dignity and openness and joy into life and into death.
We all know life in its nuances, of light and shadow.
We know less about death, maybe we think less about death and find it hard to grasp the absolute.
Because of that hospice is a gift!
At a hospice there are people who know how important a conversation, a quiet time, an experience of patience is for everybody and who can help all of us understand a little bit more.
Ghita Noerby, royal actress and protector for the Hospicefonden Danmark.

Make a bid for a celebrity – on the Net - Copenhagen, Denmark
Ole Bang
The planned auction for the benefit of Hospicefonden Danmark at Hotel D’Angleterre on Sunday the 8th of October is postponed.
Press release 3.10.06
Due to the overwhelming interest from both well- known and unknown donors Hospicefonden has chosen to postpone the auction this Sunday at Hotel D’Angleterre. “At the moment we are flooded with offers from widely different people, who would like to support Hospicefonden by donating a personal gift. Therefore we have chosen to make the many beautiful objects accessible for all interested parties by offering everything on the Net – and not only for an exclusive group”, fundraiser and initiator Ole Bang from Hospicefonden says. During the past week Hospicefonden has received donations from among others singer Lis Soerensen , who has donated an intimate concert, Per Wimmer perhaps the first astronaut in Denmark, who is offering a lecture; after hearing about the auction on TV, a friendly, anonymous woman responded by donating two paintings from her own home. The first hammer stroke will still fall as planned on Sunday the 8th of October at 3 p.m., even though the Palmehaven at Hotel D’Angleterre has been replaced by cyberspace. The first ‘item’ will be number 801, a serigraphy Pegasus, donated by Sidsel Ramson and Carl-Henning Pedersen, who dedicates and signs this work of art for the buyer of the item on Sunday. The minimum bid for this well-known work of art is 8.000 kr. Conditions for the auction. After this, Hospicefonden will run ongoing auctions on the Net, and for this reason it still invites all Danes to submit various items for evaluation and auction. The auction of Hospicefonden is a part of the international worldday, where hospice-organisations all over the world make an effort to support local hospice initiatives. This particular day emphasises the fact that everybody has a right to end life in a dignified way, but that far from everybody has this possibility today.

Christopher Klinger, M.A., Doctoral Candidate, Department of Health Policy Management & Evaluation, and Collaborative Program in Aging, Palliative and Supportive Care, Institute for Life Course and Aging, University of Toronto
In keeping with this week’s World Hospice and Palliative Care Day on October 6th, the Institute for Life Course & Aging is hosting a special presentation that will open with a screening of the Pallium Project followed by a talk on Enhancing Primary Care Physician Capacity: PE-ace Model of Integrated Palliative Home Care Delivery on Symptom Severity and Distress.
Primary care physicians play a critical role in care of the dying but may lack the knowledge, skills, and confidence to deliver effective palliative care. More importantly, given the multiple domains of EOL, support of an interdisciplinary palliative care team is needed to deliver comprehensive care that enables home death. The PE-ace project integrated interdisciplinary palliative care into family physician practices and evaluated its impact on outcomes of symptom severity, patient/family psychological distress, and patient/family/provider satisfaction with quality of care. The principal aim of the project was to build primary care physician capacity to deliver quality palliative home care using multifaceted approaches such as academic detailing. Integrated models of home care delivery should be considered in health care policy setting and future research should evaluate effectiveness in controlled trials.
