Hawkes Bay, New Zealand

Gloria Morgan

The Hospital Palliative Care Team ,HPCT has been a very recent addition to our Hospital.

We will have been in existence for two years this coming January. The service began with me as the lone nurse but now we are a small consult team with a Palliative Care Physician Dr Carol McAllum and my nursing colleague CSN Ann Gray. We have a wonderful network of Resource/Link Nurses for Palliative Care throughout our hospital that help us. We have a close relationship and are supported by our local hospice in the community.

This was the first time the event had been celebrated within the Hawke's Bay District Health Board. The Hospital Palliative Care Team was proud to join over 70 countries around the world in the celebrations.

Our lunch time event was framed around a talk by Trish Watson one of our own Hospital R/Ns. The talk was based on a personal meeting by Trish with the World Famous Palliative Care pioneer called Elisabeth Kübler Ross. Trish is quoted as saying that she felt privileged to be able to deliver a tribute to Elisabeth Kubler Ross, based on a personal meeting with her, research from the internet, and readings from selected books.EKR was a wonderful lady who left a legacy to the world with her brave pioneering and championing the concept of dying with dignity.

It was a great turnout and staff came away knowing that we are fortunate indeed to have a Palliative Service that bridges between the hospital and our community.Gloria Morgan Palliative Care CSN with the encouragement and assistance of Jennie Arnold and Dave Odumesii from the Education Centre coordinated the arrangements.

Seminar - The undergraduate education in Palliative Medicine - Rome, Italy

Giuseppe Casale

On the 6th of October 2007 Antea Formad, the Palliative Care Training and Research Centre of the Antea Associazione, is organizing in Rome (Italy) the third edition of the Seminar – The undergraduate education in Palliative Care: Antea meets the students of Rome involving the students in  medicine, nursing, physiotherapy and psychology: the aim is to promote the spreading of Palliative Medicine and Care within those university courses. Since 2000 we organize Post-graduate Master Courses in Palliative Medicine in cooperation with the University of “Tor Vergata” (Rome, Italy) and we believe in the necessity to spread the teaching of Palliative Medicine also at an undergraduate level, creating a Palliative Care culture in the Italian universities. Announce the results of the study on “the impact of Palliative care on Cancer Deaths in Hong Kong”

Lai-yan Lam

What role does palliative care play in the last journey of life of cancer patients?  Has it changed the process of dying?  In order to answer these questions, five doctors from the palliative care units of four hospitals joined together to do a retrospective study to analyse the end-of-life process of 494 advanced cancer patients randomly selected.

The results show that patients who have received palliative care service had less admission to and had shorter duration of stay in acute care wards, than patients who had not received palliative care service.  The former also had less admission to ICU setting, had fewer interventions initiated, and higher symptoms documented in patient’s record.  The results suggest that palliative care service has played a role in improving end-of-life cancer care in Hong Kong.

More details regarding this study would be announced at a press conference held on 4 October :

Share and Care, Love and Link - Trivandrum, India

Cherian Koshy

We plan to inaugurate the teleconferencing facility established between the Regional Cancer Centre, and Pain and Palliative Care Centre, Adimali , Munnar,  which is 300 km from our Centre. This was established with a generous grant from the Help the Hospices, UK to Dr Titty Cherian whose brain child is this venture. Munnar nestled as a verdant green exquisite spot at altitudes 1500 - 2695 metres is a must see tourist destination with tea plantation and colonial villas established by the British. This is going to benefit hundreds of patients for whom travel would be a problem.

We also wish to conduct an awareness campaign on Palliative Care linking the Federation of Residents Associations of Trivandrum (FRAT)

On this day we wish to  officially dedicate the new Van gifted to 'Care- Plus' the NGO which takes Palliative Care to the doorstep of patients in Trivandrum. This van was gisted by the Patricia atkinson Trust UK

Ian Jenkins

Annie Wilson was fundraiser at Springhill Hospice until her untimely death from cancer in July this year. For many years prior to her getting 'a proper job' she was a professional dancer and singer, initially around the world, then, after the birth of her son, at venues across the UK.

With the blessing of, and assistance from, her family and friends, we are remembering Annie with a special Voices for Hospices concert featuring many of her showbusiness colleagues.

This special night will take place at the Civic Centre, Heywood, Lancashire, on Sunday 7th October commencing at 7:30pm. Tickets, priced at £12.00 and inclusive of a potato-pie supper, are available from Springhill Hospice Fundraising Office on 01706 711144.

Hello friends!

We're very excited to present a 3-day pediatric palliative care conference in Akron, Ohio. It isn't often that we can join together to discuss current issues; see and hear what's going on in other areas of the country; learn from each other's models and experiences; and discuss future developments. On behalf of OPPEN, I extend a heartfelt and enthusiastic invitation to come and network with your colleagues, and enjoy an amazing program with energizing keynotes and stimulating break-out sessions. -- Sarah Friebert, M.D.
