We are sad to inform Voices for Hospices and World Hospice and Paliative Care Day supporters of the death of Sheila Hurton. Sheila Hurton was the founder of Voices for Hospices and a truly inspiring individual. She had a huge impact on the development of hospice and palliative care around the world. She was a founding trustee of Princess Alice Hospice in Esher, UK and the founder of the "Friends of the Shepherd's Hospice, Sierra Leone", which supported the development of the one and only hospice service there through all of the political unrest.
Sheila's commitment and passion for hospice and palliative care saw Voices for Hospices become the largest ever global singing of The Messiah. Countries all around the world, and many thousands of people participate, raising significant funds and awareness for hospice and palliative care.
Sheila died peacefully in Princess Alice Hospice.
On October 8 2011 during our Voices for Hospices events we will all be remembering Sheila. Her huge energy, wisdom, commitment and good will were an inspiration to all those who worked with her. Her death is a huge loss to everyone who knew her but the impact she had on the lives of many people living with life-limiting illness around the world will not be forgotten.
A memorial site has been set up for Sheila where you can share your thoughts and stories about her remarkable life.
